How to Style The Fringe Trend This Summer

Sometimes I wonder whether designers gather to discuss what trend to make the focus of the year before hitting the drawing board. Because some seasons seem to have a string tying all the collections together: a shared color palette, silhouette, or detail that appears across nearly every runway.

For Spring 2026, that detail was fringe and tassels. Every notable designer from Chanel to Loewe and Bottega Veneta incorporated some iteration of the embellishment into their shows—on bags, dresses, or skirts. A season earlier, Jil Sander sent fringe-heavy dresses down the runway, perhaps setting off the fringe frenzy we are now witnessing.

But just because a designer (or five) decided on making the flouncy frays the detail du jour doesn’t mean the public will so easily accept it. We’ve seen plenty of attempted trends that didn’t catch on, whether that’s because the designer was years ahead of the common folk or living in a different reality entirely. Fringes and tassels, however, don’t have that problem. We, the people, have accepted the movement-rich strands into our wardrobes with little to no resistance.

Perhaps it’s because fringes feel like a maximalist detail that minimalists can accept. It adds dimension and visual flair without being overtly attention-grabbing. It’s an accessory that can easily be added to a blank canvas, adding a focal point that’s neither too much nor too little. Unlike patterns or bold colors, a textured detail, such as the fringe, feels much more inviting to anyone adhering to a minimalist wardrobe.

Tassel necklaces were all the rage over the winter. For the more committed, a fringe-detailed scarf tied around the waist is a common styling trick. If you want to dive in headfirst, then Givenchy’s tassel shoes await to be worn. Wherever you lie on the spectrum, I pulled together some fun ways to style fringe and tassels this summer, below.

As an Accessory

If you’re easing into the trend, a safe way to do so is by opting for fringe accessories that can be added to your outfit. Tassel necklaces, as previously mentioned, are a fun and easy way to test the trend out with little commitment. Bags and shoes are one step ahead, and can more easily transform your look into something eye-catching. Keep the rest of your outfit pared back—don’t try to mix too many textures and patterns so that your accessories may stand out on their own.

As a Skirt or Dress

Personally, I love a fringe detail at the hem of a skirt—it’s both whimsical and editorial. The little strings dancing around your legs with every step you take feel positively freeing. I purchased a fringe-detailed dress from Sandro the last time I was in Paris (here it is worn on my birthday last year), and it might just be my favorite thing in the closet. Tied Around the Waist

Last summer, we were all tying silk scarves around our waists. We’re keeping much of the same styling hack but adding fringes to the accessory. If you’ve spent any time on Pinterest at all this year, you’d know that accentuating your waist with a long, silk fringe scarf is the trick to know in 2026.
