My Go-To Everyday Makeup Routine for Asian-American Features

PC: Florré

When I was younger, I was obsessed with Nina Dobrev’s makeup look from The Vampire Diaries. At 16, I tried my best to emulate her smoky eye, following the tutorials I found online to a T. But no matter how hard I tried, my eyelids wouldn’t cooperate. I didn’t have the hollowed eyesockets that the actress became famous for. Every makeup guru who taught me to shade in the corners of my eyes and make circles above my pupil only had me looking like I got a black eye. In short, makeup for my Asian-American face needed to be different.

Of course, my lack of makeup skills at that age played a major role, but even a professional wouldn’t have been able to copy Dobrev’s look one-to-one on my face.

To my own surprise, it didn’t deter me all that much. After all, I had a stack of Japanese magazines at my disposal that provided thorough step-by-step guides on how to do makeup for Asian faces. The disappointment only came when I realized that those, too, didn’t work on my face. Because I have neither classic American nor Asian eyelids, I had something in between.

Nowadays, there are plenty of beauty influencers similar to myself who have made makeup looks on Asian American faces much easier to follow. At 30 now, I’ve perfected makeup for halfies (as we like to call ourselves), and feel pretty confident in the beauty routine I’ve built for myself. I don’t have monolids, nor do I have hooded lids. I have slim double eyelids, which, when puffy, look like monolids.

Beyond just the eye makeup, though, I wanted to write out my full makeup routine for someone with yellow undertones and tons of freckles. I use a mix of high and low-end products to create an easy, everyday makeup look that can be completed in under 10 minutes. See below!

The Base:

Trust me when I say this drugstore foundation is all you need to complete the perfect base. As a beauty writer for major magazines, I’ve tested a plethora of foundations, both high-end and affordable, and concluded that the foundation I’ve used all throughout high school and college still wins. It’s medium coverage and under $12—doesn’t make you look cakey and only blurs out imperfections while still keeping a somewhat natural appearance.

A little goes a lo(oooo)ng way with this concealer. It’s highly spreadable and I already know my one tub is going to last me years. I dab it right under and over my eyes to brighten them and make me look more awake.

Next, I take my Fenty contour stick and draw a curved line at the top of my forehead. I also define my cheekbones before blending them in with my Merit brush. This gives my face a bit of definition.

I love a lot of blushes, but this Victoria Beckham one seems to be the one I gravitate to the most. I find the miniskirt shade to look mature and sexy. It also stays put all day instead of sliding down due to my oily complexion.

I own exactly one brush, and it’s this Merit beauty brush. I blend in the contour, the blush, and the concealer to give everything a more natural finish.

Lastly, I dab on a bit of highlighter at the top of my nose and cheekbones. I love this Dior option and have had mine for years.

The Eyes

Merit Solo Shadow, Shade Palladium

For the eyes, I use the tip of my finger to dab a little bit of this cream concealer in the inner corners of my eyelids. The goal here is to make my eyes pop and not look too sparkly.

Kulfi Kajal Eyeliner, Shade Cheeky Chiku

My eyes were forever changed once I started using this Kajal eyeliner by Kulfi. Up until then, I was using a black liquid eyeliner. But the brown kajal pencil gives me eyes a very sweet, soft touch that enhances, rather than takes over, my eyes.

PRO TIP: I only use it at the corners of my eyes, stretching out the appearance of my almond-shaped eyes. I don’t line the entire upper eyelid.

I received this mascara for a story I was writing for Harper’s Bazaar, where I tested out Meghan Markle’s entire beauty routine. I haven’t stopped using it since. It actually doubles the length of my lashes, never smudges, yet practically melts off with ease at the end of the day. I can’t recommend this enough.
