Bags On The Runway Were Actually Really Desireable This Season
PC: Vogue
I feel like the bags from the previous seasons were an afterthought to many designers. Minus the repeatedly trending bags from Miu Miu, the purses carried down the runway were reduced to their simple accessory status: there to enhance the outfit. But not this season. I found myself more drawn to the leather goods clutched to the sides of models in shows by Celine or Proenza Schouler than ever before. I caught myself scrolling down to the “Details” section on Vogue Runway just to get a better glimpse at the Max Mara accessories—and that’s a designer where I typically focus on the supremely tailored trousers and blazers. The bags at Miu Miu actually paled in comparison, which says a lot.
This season featured plenty of actually usable bags that would make a busy woman’s life easier. Totes big enough to fit a laptop, purses with securable zips and double straps: these were not just beautiful, but functional. That’s not to say there weren’t a number of tiny fashionable bags in the mix, too, as my guest writer Jonne Scholten pointed out in her Paris Fashion Week recap. But I feel like we’re pivoting back to the days when bags were the collectible items from designer brands. Everyone wanted a Celine Luggage Bag or a Balenciaga City Bag. And while the focus has mainly been on quiet luxury clothing, this season gave me hope that beautiful, statement-making carry-alls are making a return.
Personal observation that’s completely opinion-based: I think designers saw the success of The Row’s Margaux bag and were reminded that they, too, need to create lust-worthy accessories. Pieces that aren’t too trendy or leaning into any one aesthetic. Because the bags that jumped out at me didn’t belong to any one season, but could be worn day and night, spring or summer, and would carry more than just a lip gloss and a phone—all features that made the Margaux jump to stardom.
While many of these bags won’t be released until the Spring, I pulled a few useful, chic, everyday designer bags you can already shop, below. With the new year coming around, it’s the perfect opportunity to empty out that dusty bag you’ve been schlepping to work and treat yourself to some new arm candy.
Woven totes continue to trend this season and make for a chic, durable work bag. I love this option by Serapian.
I saw someone carrying this purse the other day, believed it to be Loewe, but it turns out to be this super affordable alternative instead.
This carry-all tote features both linen and leather, making it an eye-catching style that not everyone owns. I’m equally obsessed with their weekender bag, too.
This Khaite tote remains at the top of my wishlist, perhaps Christmas is the perfect time to splurge?
If you’re looking for something similar to the Margaux, then this Jacquemus bag has to be it.
