Diana Ross Just Showed Up To The Met Gala For The First Time in 22 Years

Diana Ross basically just shut down the Met Gala within the first five minutes. Ross, who hasn’t attended a single Met Gala since 2003, sauntered up the steps in a custom Ugo Mozie gown, accompanied by her son Evan Ross. With this year’s theme being “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” the event brought out some of the brightest Black talent in Hollywood. How fitting, therefore, for the iconic Diana Ross to come out of her Met Gala retirement and show out for this momentous occasion.

Her wide brimmed feathered hat was enough to take my breath away, but the pop star took it six steps further by pulling a massive train behind her. It took seven men just to help carry the train up the Met steps.

The all white ensemble was made up of diamonds and feathers, which channelled a very ‘20s, old Hollywood glam. In an interview with Lala Anthony for Vogue, she explained that she has every one of her children’s names embroidered onto the train. Speaking of which, Tracee Ellis Ross (daughter of Diana) is set to go up the blue carpet later in the evening as well. A fashion icon herself, I’m eager to see what the younger Ross has prepared for the evening.

We are overflowing with Black excellence tonight—there’s no shortage of big, glamorous diamonds and clean cut silhouettes. Black and white ensembles are aplenty as well, and it seems like everyone truly understood this year’s assignment. Quite a few of co-host Pharrell William’s new designs as Louis Vuitton’s Creative Director are on the carpet as well—just take a look at Sabrina Carpenter, Doechii, or Zendaya.

It’s a historic night for Black designers and fashion, and while there’s no shortage of incredibly creative and beautiful looks on the screen (currently gawking at Cynthia Erivo), I’m still giddy about Diana Ross’s return to the Met Gala.
