Nice Things Calm Me, What Can I Say
PC: Pinterest
I woke up in pain this morning. I rushed to the bathroom, took some medication, looked at my puffy reflection, and crawled back into bed in dismay (where my dog never left his spot under the blanket). Having been busy with the move, I haven’t had much time to focus on my fitness or diet, resulting in my double chin greeting me loudly as my partner FaceTimes me (just to add fuel to the fire burning in my lower abdomen). With a heat pack on my belly and a comforting coffee in my hand, I declared this morning a stay-in-bed-and-watch-soothing-vlogs kind of morning.
My comfort vlogger, by the way, is Moya Mawhinney, whom I highly recommend if you enjoy artsy, slow videos that evoke a nostalgic feeling about a time you lived in Paris (even if you haven’t). And as I nursed my belly and retreated into my hoodie, a scene came up on the screen: her packing for an upcoming trip to Switzerland. Dior riding boots on her floor, cashmere sweaters folded on her bed, and a leather tote waiting to be filled. And for whatever reason, a calm sensation washed over me. Nice things, apparently, have a stronger meditative effect on me than medication or a heat pack.

How very vain of me, you might think, but I doubt I’m the first to experience this. Retail therapy is already a well-known concept, and while I’m not out here buying designer boots and bags, just the mere sight of them puts me in a good mood. It’s why I prefer to scroll through Pinterest over Instagram—a place where I can curate all my favorite styles and mood-boosting pictures. And it’s not all fashion-related. I like all nice things, from vintage leather chairs to this incredibly designed espresso machine. Is it strange that their appearances can soothe my anxiety and make me feel at peace?
I think it’s important to surround yourself with nice things—things that make you feel proud, positive, and upbeat. Drinking coffee out of the mug I bought in Japan tastes infinitely better than the same coffee in a paper cup. In the same way, walking through life in the clothes you adore, the shoes you splurged a pretty penny on, or ending the night on the organic cotton sheets from Hommey just make. life. better. So I’m going to keep enjoying the nice things in life, as that’s what my heart calls to do, and feel zero guilt while at it.
Love,
Your Bedridden Bianca
